Riders brave rain, cold for parade
"Of Course Pony Express Riders Are Tough" Why else, on November 22, 1992, would 23 riders from the Kansas Pony Express division, along with the Nebraska President, Leonard Hilton, brave the rain and cold to go to Kansas City and ride in the American Royal Parade.
When we started there had been snow and ice, turning into rain and more, just plain cold weather. Long johns and anything else you could think of to keep you warm, were the order of the day.
Several of us were of the opinion that it wasn't the smartest thing we'd done. But, we warmed up considerably when Mike Rutti, President of the Kansas Division, received a trophy at the American Royal ceremony. We'd placed second out of twenty-two horse divisions. Hey, that ain't half bad when you're playin' with the big boys.
